Pilot Project Utilizing Nihon Suido Consultants’ Real-time Stormwater Management System (Blitz GIS) Awarded for MLIT’s “WOW to Japan” Initiative

A joint venture formed by Nihon Suido Consultants Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director and President: NAKANISHI Shinji) and the Kitakyushu City Water and Sewer Bureau (Chief Executive: HIRONAKA Yoshitaka) has had its proposal for smart stormwater management technology awarded for the FY2025 Sewerage Technology Overseas Demonstration Project (“Wonder of Wastewater Technology of Japan,” or “WOW to Japan” initiative) by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT).

This demonstration project will utilize Nihon Suido Consultants’ proprietary Real-time Stormwater Management System (Blitz GIS).

Project overview

  • Demonstration technology:

Smart stormwater management technology

  • Implementing entity:

Joint venture formed to carry out an overseas demonstration of smart stormwater management in Vietnam

  • Implementation city:

Hai Phong, Vietnam

  • Description:

In Vietnam, where flooding damage is worsening due to urbanization and climate change, the project will demonstrate the effectiveness of the Blitz GIS, which consolidates rainfall data and manhole water levels for real-time display on a management interface and issues alerts when warning levels are reached. The system will also support rapid flood response, identification of flood causes, and the formulation of effective infrastructure countermeasures.

Background

As a member company of the Kitakyushu Overseas Water Business Association (KOWBA), we proposed this project to the city’s Water and Sewer Bureau, with whom it jointly applied under the “WOW to Japan” initiative. Kitakyushu and Hai Phong are sister cities, and Kitakyushu’s Water and Sewer Bureau has been providing ongoing technical cooperation in areas such as wastewater treatment plant operation and flood control training since 2010.

Roles

  • Nihon Suido Consultants Co., Ltd.:

Will be responsible for equipment installation and system deployment and operation in Hai Phong as well as promotion and roll-out of the system to other major cities in Vietnam.

  • City of Kitakyushu:

Will utilize the data aggregated by the system to improve flood response frameworks and carry out training for local personnel.
