Nihon Suido Consultants Wins Contract for the Project for Formulation of Water Supply Master Plan in Siem Reap, Cambodia (QCBS); Begins Operations

Nihon Suido Consultants Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director and President: NAKANISHI Shinji) has been awarded a contract for the Project for Formulation of Water Supply Master Plan in Siem Reap, Cambodia (Quality and Cost Based Selection (QCBS)), by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The company, which is serving as the lead company of a joint venture (JV) along with partners CTI Engineering International Co., Ltd. and Tokyo Engineering Consultants Co., Ltd., has commenced work on the project.

Project background

Having identified the water sector as one of five key priorities under its Pentagonal Strategy Phase 1 (2023–2050), the government of Cambodia is working to achieve 100% access to water supply services by 2030. However, as of 2022, access to safely managed drinking water stood at just 29.13% nationwide and 57.50% in urban areas, making improved access to safe drinking water an urgent priority.

Siem Reap, home to the Angkor Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a city of strategic importance to the country, where tourism accounts for 12% of GDP. At the same time, the city and its surrounding areas face a number of pressing challenges, including rapidly growing water demand and insufficient infrastructure, deteriorating water source conditions and climate change impacts, and the need to maintain sound financial management of associated infrastructure under the aegis of the Siem Reap Water Supply Authority (SRWSA).

Against this backdrop, developing a medium- to long-term plan for water supply infrastructure within the service area of the SRWSA has become essential to further expand access to safe drinking water and support the region’s sustainable development.

Project overview

Under the project, Nihon Suido Consultants will analyze the current condition of existing water supply facilities, forecast future water demand, examine facility development plans, and prepare a water supply master plan for the SRWSA’s service area. The company will also conduct a feasibility study for priority projects.
