Nihon Suido Consultants’
“Outlook on Water”
Since time immemorial,
the very existence of water has been of utmost importance to us.
According to the ancient Chinese philosophy of the five elements, all things are made up of fire, water, wood, metal, and earth, while the ancient Greek theory of the four elements believed that all matter is composed of the elements of fire, wind, water, and earth.
Water is a symbol of life, rebirth, and purification,
and is an indispensable part of our everyday lives.
Water represents cleanliness and purity and is used in various rituals as a symbol of sanctification or spiritual rebirth. In Japan, it also plays a role in purification, as in the case of hand-rinsing water found at temples and shrines, sumo wrestlers’ power water, uchimizu (sprinkled water) for welcoming guests, and tsukubai (stone wash basin) in tea ceremony rooms.
Water not only flows gently and quietly,
it also possesses the great power to move things violently.
The flooding of the Nile brought fertile soil to its surrounding areas, ancient Rome’s prosperity was facilitated by its waterways, and the canals built around the world have had a profound impact on transportation, trade, and culture. In the case of Japan also, taming its wild rivers enriched the country.
Water may seem colorless and clear,
but its color changes depending on the environment.
River water, which reflects a blue color under a blue sky and red under the setting sun, turns a reddish brown color when it floods. Lakes with blue-green algae blooms turn a green color, while seas with red tides can take on a reddish-brown color. Rain falling from the sky may be clear and colorless, but what color is the water that flows through cities, into the river, and out to sea?
Water enriches us emotionally
and gives us creative abilities.
The murmuring of a river, the lapping of the waves, and the gentle sound of rain give us a sense of peace and tranquility. Poetic expressions of the flow and nature of water, such as the passage in the Hojoki (“An Account of My Hut”), can be found in literary works around the world. Painters have also depicted water with color, shade, and the flow of their brush strokes.
