Solving Social Issues

Nihon Suido Consultants is solving various social issues with sophisticated technological capabilities cultivated over many years.

Climate Change

Climate change brought about by global warming is endangering people’s lives.

Challenge: Decarbonizing Society

Reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, the primary cause of global warming, is essential to realizing a decarbonized society. To realize this goal, it is necessary to shift from fossil fuel-dependent energy systems to energy systems running on renewable power such as hydroelectric, solar, and wind power, and furthermore, to improve the efficiency of energy use.

Challenge: Preparing for Super-Typhoons and Torrential Rains

Super-typhoons and torrential rains are increasing as a result of global warming, and the risk of flood damage is rising, including rapidly rising or overflowing rivers, rainfall inundation in urban areas, and flooding caused by storm surges in coastal areas. To cope with these floods, it is necessary to strengthen infrastructure such as levees and sluice gates, develop flood forecasting systems, and enhance drainage facilities in urban areas.

Carbon Neutrality

We conduct feasibility studies concerning energy saving, creation, and re-energization in the fields of water and sewage, and formulate water supply and sewerage system plans that address global warming.

Flood and Inundation Measures

From a perspective of river basin flood control, we formulate inundation measures that cover both river water and rainfall inundation over a wide area. In addition, we make a rated assessment of disaster risk to identify damage-prone catchment areas, and formulate a sediment and flood inundation countermeasure plan.

Weakening Social Systems

A resilient water infrastructure is increasingly required.

Challenge: Capacity for Rapid Recovery in the Event of a Disaster

There is an increasing risk of water supply interruptions due to drought, water supply cutoffs following natural disasters, and other situations where water becomes unavailable. To address these risks, water infrastructure systems must be well maintained and be resilient enough to recover rapidly in the event of a disaster.

Challenge: Adequate Maintenance and Management of Water Infrastructure Facilities

In many regions, with the exception of some areas such as the Tokyo metropolitan area, there is concern that the population will continue to decline, impacting the number of employees working for local governments and resulting in budget cuts. It tends to become more difficult for the public (government) to take the lead in providing and maintaining various intra-regional services for residents as in the past.

Measures to Bolster the Disaster Resistance and Support the Recovery of Facilities

We develop comprehensive earthquake resistance plans that combine “disaster prevention” to protect important facilities from earthquakes and “disaster mitigation” to reduce damage in the event of a disaster. In addition, BCP training will be designed based on the experiences gained during recovery support in previous large-scale disasters.

Measures to Address Aging and Maintenance of Facilities

We propose efficient aging and maintenance management measures by effectively managing the vast stock of facilities through AI-based facility deterioration prediction, the use of cloud-based ledger management systems, and other tools.

PPP/PFI (Public-Private Partnership)

We build business models from both perspectives: support operations as a client and business operations as an operator.

Declining Regional Vitality and Attractiveness

Due to population decline and economic decline,
some communities are searching for ways to maintain their vitality.

Challenge: Redressing Economic Disparities

Significant differences can be found in access to economic, education, employment, healthcare, infrastructure, and other services at the national and city level. These disparities risk having a negative impact on the development of a sustainable society and the preservation of the water environment.

Challenge: Creation of New Value in Regional Development

Water is a critical element in the sustainable development of a community and can also be a source of new business opportunities. By maximizing the potential value of water resources, the economic and cultural attractiveness of a region can be enhanced.

Water Basin and Small-Scale Water Infrastructure Management

Based on an analysis of the current status and future projections of a project, we propose measures to promote various broad-based partnerships transcending municipal boundaries. We also build small-scale, decentralized service models for the maintenance of water infrastructure in depopulated areas.

Utilization of Water Resources

We propose the development and utilization of resource and energy conversion technologies, such as hydropower generation in water supply facilities, rivers, erosion control, and streams, and the conversion of sewage sludge into fertilizer.

Town-Planning

We help to drive regional revitalization through the establishment, maintenance and operation of disaster prevention centers that utilize unused water energy, and also by creating waterside recreational spaces.
